Impact of natural menopause on multiple sclerosis: A multicentre study
Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry Jun 16, 2019
Baroncini D, et al. - Via performing an observational, retrospective, multicenter, cohort study with a sample of 148 patients, researcher studied the effect of natural menopause on the clinical course of multiple sclerosis (MS). They found that, following menopause, the MS annualized relapse rate (ARR) significantly decreased. Older age and long-lasting disease was associated with ARR reduction, but not with disability worsening. A trend of higher disability accumulation post-menopause was noted among cigarette smokers. Thus, the investigators concluded that natural menopause may be a turning point to a more progressive phase of MS.
