Impact of metabolic syndrome on recovery of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss

American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Jun 15, 2019

Zhou Y, et al. - In this investigation, researchers assessed the impact of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components on the recovery of patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). Two hundred twenty-eight ISSNHL patients were divided into two groups (MetS group and Non-MetS group) according to the diagnostic criteria of MetS, and demographic and clinical features and hearing recovery were reviewed between the groups. The MetS group had significantly higher rates of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, low HDL-C, elevated TG and obesity vs those in the Non-MetS group. In the MetS group, the complete recovery rate and partial recovery rate were significantly lower than in the Non-MetS group. These findings indicate that MetS has an adverse effect on ISSNHL's hearing recovery. Indictors of a poor prognosis of ISSNHL were high initial hearing threshold and diabetes mellitus.
