Impact of macronutrient supplements for children born preterm or small for gestational age on developmental and metabolic outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis
PLoS Medicine Nov 07, 2019
Lin L, et al. - A systematic review and meta-analysis of 21 randomized clinical trials and one quasirandomised trial of nutritional supplements including 3,680 infants born preterm or small for gestational age was carried out in order to evaluate the impacts of macronutrient supplements for infants born small on later development and metabolism. Early supplements provided to infants born small did not modify overall cognitive function, however in toddlers, early supplements reduced motor impairment and enhanced cognitive scores in boys. Following early nutritional supplements, some markers of risk of metabolic disease were raised. Thus, in this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials, no evidence that early macronutrient supplementation for infants born small modified later cognitive function was discovered, however, there was some indication that supplementation could reduce motor impairment in toddlers. Contradictory to the findings from observational studies, proof from randomized trials implies that early macronutrient supplementation for infants born small enhances some metabolic outcomes in childhood.
