Impact of lung function on cardiovascular diseases and cardiovascular risk factors: A two sample bidirectional Mendelian randomisation study
Thorax Jun 24, 2021
Au Yeung SL, Borges MC, Lawlor DA, et al. - Researchers investigated the role of lung function in cardiovascular disease (CVD) as well as its risk factors, and conversely the role of CVD in lung function, via this two sample Mendelian randomisation study using summary statistics from genome-wide association studies. An inverse relationship of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV 1 ) and forced vital capacity (FVC) with coronary artery disease (CAD), overall stroke and some stroke subtypes, was found. FEV 1 and FVC were identified to be inversely linked with type 2 diabetes and systolic blood pressure. Overall, findings indicate that a protective impact against the development of CAD and stroke is likely conferred by a higher lung function.
