Impact of intraoperative dexamethasone after scheduled cesarean delivery: A retrospective study
International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia Jul 01, 2019
Nanji JA, et al. - Researchers determined whether improved pain and reduced postoperative nausea/vomiting following scheduled cesarean delivery could be achieved with routine intraoperative administration of dexamethasone. Via electronic medical records, they gathered data for scheduled cesarean deliveries performed under neuraxial anesthesia prior to and following a practice change that introduced the routine use of dexamethasone 4 mg IV. Based on the receipt of routine care (n = 182) or also dexamethasone (n = 187), they analyzed the patients. In the context of a multimodal postoperative analgesia regimen, no additional analgesic benefit post-scheduled cesarean delivery was seen in relation to routine administration of intraoperative dexamethasone 4 mg IV in this impact study of over 360 patients.
