Impact of interhospital transfer on patient outcomes in emergency general surgery
Surgery Oct 28, 2020
Allen L, Vogt K, Joos E, et al. - Researchers investigated postoperative outcomes of patients who were transferred from another hospital to a center with dedicated acute care surgery services vs those admitted directly to the acute care surgery centers via conducting a secondary analysis of a national, multicenter review of emergency general surgery patients who underwent complex emergency general surgery at 5 centers across Canada. Among a total of 1,846 included patients, 176 (9.5%) were transferred. Observations suggest a higher odds of worse outcomes and greater use of resources among complex emergency general surgery patients who are transferred to acute care surgery centers vs those admitted directly. This finding has clinically and financially relevant implications for the design and regionalization of acute care surgery services and for resource allocation at acute care surgery centers.
