Impact of insecure immigration status and ethnicity on antenatal mental health among migrant women

The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry Aug 05, 2019

Anderson FM, et al. - In an inner-London maternity service, researchers compared migrant women (n = 283) with UK-born women (n = 262), regarding the prevalence and odds of antenatal common mental disorders (CMDs). They administered a cross-sectional survey stratified by response to depression screening questions at first antenatal appointment. Prevalence of antenatal CMDs was 21% and 24% among migrant women and UK-born women respectively. Migrant status on its own did not increase the risk. They observed increased odds of posttraumatic stress disorder among migrant women, particularly among those with insecure immigration status. They recommend investigating immigration status, ethnicity, and other intersecting variables of social disadvantage, concurrently to examining the perinatal mental health of heterogeneous migrant populations.
