Impact of infection on admission and of the process of care on mortality of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit: The INFAUCI study
Clinical Microbiology and Infection Aug 05, 2019
Gonçalves-Pereira J, Pereira JM, Ribeiro O, et al. – Via analyzing data from patients in 14 ICUs, researchers determined the contemporary epidemiology, morbi-mortality, and determinants of outcome of patients with an infection upon admission. A total of 3,766 admitted patients were screened during a consecutive 12-month period. Infection was detected in 43.9% upon admission to the ICU; the infection was community-acquired in 68.2% and ward-acquired in the others. The investigators noted increased mortality in correlation to the detection of infection, which was observed regardless of its place of acquisition. The investigators projected better outcomes upon improving the process of care, especially first-line antibiotic appropriateness, and preventing ICU-acquired infections.
