Impact of hip fracture on all-cause mortality in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: The Fukuoka Diabetes Registry
Journal of Diabetes Investigation May 24, 2019
Komorita Y, et al. - In comparison with cardiovascular disease (CVD) or end-stage renal disease (ERSD), researchers examined the connection between hip fracture and all-cause death in patients with type 2 diabetes. In total, 4,923 Japanese candidates with type 2 diabetes were followed for a median of 5.3 years. By logistic regression analysis, the relationships between the presence of hip fracture, upper limb fracture, CVD, ESRD, and all-cause death were assessed. During follow-up, 309 participants died. Multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were significantly higher for all-cause mortality in participants with than without hip fractures, whereas upper limb fracture ORs were not significant. In Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes, hip fractures were linked to an increased risk of death, regardless of CVD and ESRD. The cause of death among participants with hip fracture was malignant neoplasm, infection and CVD.
