Impact of head and neck cancer treatment on survivors' mealtime experience

The Laryngoscope Jun 21, 2019

Chan KMK, et al. - In this investigation, researchers created a mealtime experience self-assessment questionnaire that was head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors–driven and based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework, and identified common mealtime issues reported by HNC survivors. Mealtime issues reported by HNC survivors in prior research was synthesized and classified using the ICF framework to develop the content and structure of the Head and Neck Cancer Survivors' Assessment of Mealtimes (HNSAM). In total, 122 HNC survivors completed both HNSAM and M.D. There was a significant correlation between the HNSAM scores and the MDADI scores. Compared to nondysphagic participants (n = 77), dysphagic participants (n = 45) had significantly higher HNSAM scores. After cancer treatment, HNC survivors experience mealtime changes. Both dysphagic and nondysphagic participants reported problems related to saliva and were unable to enjoy the food/drinks they had previously enjoyed. These initial validity data support the HNSAM's potential to help identify changes to the mealtime experience for HNC survivors. It is now necessary to validate the English version of the tool.
