Impact of frailty on outcomes in surgical patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The American Journal of Surgery Dec 03, 2018
Panayi AC, et al. - For the first time, researchers synthesized the literature to ascertain the efficacy of the modified frailty index (mFI) to predict surgical risk across all surgical specialties. The primary outcomes assessed included post-operative complications, re-admission, re-operation, discharge to a skilled care facility, and mortality. Outcomes suggest that the mFI is an underappreciated prognostic indicator that strongly associates with the risk of post-surgical morbidity and mortality. Formal incorporation of pre-operative frailty assessment is thus suggested to improve surgical decision-making.
