Impact of extent of surgery on tumor recurrence and survival for papillary thyroid cancer patients
Annals of Surgical Oncology Aug 09, 2018
Gartland RM, et al. - In this systematical review, researchers investigated if tumor recurrence and survival is impacted by thyroid lobectomy vs total thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) patients with tumors measuring 1.0–4.0 cm. After analyzing 13 relevant studies, results revealed that total thyroidectomy does not offer a clinically significant improvement in disease-specific survival vs thyroid lobectomy. Four of six studies also reported a small but statistically significant improvement in disease-free survival linked to total thyroidectomy, although the clinical significance of this difference is not clear.
