Impact of extent of parotidectomy on early and long-term complications: A prospective multicenter cohort trial
Head & Neck May 30, 2019
Grosheva M, et al. - Researchers investigated the incidence of early and late complications after parotidectomy in correlation to the extent of dissection. After 6 and 12 months, late complications such as facial nerve palsy, Frey's syndrome (FS) and the result of scar and substance loss were also evaluated. A total of 148 patients had a parotidectomy in the superficial lobe for a benign lesion. According to this prospective nonrandomized multicenter trial, less extensive tissue dissection on the first postoperative day resulted in better postoperative facial nerve function and lower FS incidence after 12 months. The incidence of early complications, however, was not dependent on the extent of surgery. During the follow-up, the appearance of the scar and substance loss improved substantially without significant correlation to the extent of dissection.
