Impact of electronic cardiac (ECG) monitoring on delivery room resuscitation and neonatal outcomes
Resuscitation Aug 10, 2019
Shah BA, Wlodaver AG, Escobedo MB, et al. - Researchers conducted an observational cohort study examining how the implementation of ECG monitoring influenced delivery room resuscitation interventions and neonatal outcomes. Maternal, perinatal and infant characteristics, before (retrospective cohort, calendar year 2015) and after (prospective cohort, calendar year 2017) implementing ECG monitoring in the delivery room were examined. In the delivery room, 632 newly born infants were administered positive pressure ventilation; of these, 369 vs 263 received ECG monitoring vs no ECG monitoring, respectively. They observed fewer endotracheal intubations and increase use of chest compressions in correlation with the introduction of ECG monitoring; there was no difference in mortality.
