Impact of early postbariatric surgery acute kidney injury on long-term renal function
Obesity Surgery Jul 27, 2018
Hanipah ZN, et al. - Researchers studied patient undergoing bariatric surgery from 2008 to 2015 who developed acute kidney injury (AKI) within 60 days after surgery to assess the long-term consequences of early postoperative AKI on renal function. As per findings, nearly 1% patients experience early postoperative AKI after bariatric surgery. Dehydration and infectious complications were the most common causes of AKI after bariatric surgery. Long-term follow-up showed worsening of renal function in 10% of patients who developed AKI in early postoperative period in the present series. In the absence of severe sepsis and severe underlying kidney dysfunction (chronic kidney disease stages 4 and 5), full recovery may follow after postoperative AKI.
