Impact of discrepancies in general and abdominal obesity on major adverse cardiac events
Journal of the American Heart Association Sep 12, 2019
Choi D, et al. - Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort, researchers investigated how the risk for major adverse cardiac events is affected by general and abdominal obesity discrepancies. For this purpose, they used Cox proportional hazards models. Participants included 315,982 individuals aged ≥ 40 years. Findings revealed an elevated risk of major cardiovascular outcomes in correlation with abdominal obesity without general obesity, while no such elevated risk was identified in relation to general obesity without abdominal obesity. Findings are suggestive of the possible benefit of concurrent determination of BMI and waist circumference for an accurate evaluation of future cardiovascular risk.
