Impact of critical illness on resource utilization: A comparison of use in the year before and after ICU admission
Critical Care Medicine Oct 21, 2019
Hirshberg EL, Wilson EL, Stanfield V, et al. - Since there is a lack of clarity regarding the complete influence of ICU admission on an individual’s resource utilization and survivorship trajectory in the United States, therefore, researchers compared healthcare utilization among ICU survivors in each year surrounding an ICU admission in this retrospective cohort study. Participants were patients who were admitted to an ICU during one calendar year (2012) in a multipayer healthcare system. Findings revealed increased resource utilization including hospital readmissions in relation to an ICU admission, with many attributable to an ambulatory care sensitive condition. Increased resource utilization was reported in relation to lower socioeconomic status and higher severity of illness. The use of hospital resources over outpatient resources by patients was observed following an ICU visit. There is a necessity for interventions to enhance and coordinate care following ICU discharge.
