Impact of COVID‐19 lockdown on symptoms in patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders: Relationship with anxiety and perceived stress
Neurogastroenterology & Motility Feb 10, 2021
Oliviero G, Ruggiero L, D’Antonio E, et al. - Researchers sought to evaluate the connection between gastrointestinal symptoms changes, stress, and anxiety reported during the Italian coronavirus lockdown in a cohort of patients regularly monitored at a dedicated outpatient clinic in Southern Italy. Patients were recruited from the University of Salerno outpatient clinic, which is dedicated to functional gastrointestinal disorders; they only selected patients who had an available evaluation from the last 6 months prior to the lockdown. A higher risk of worsening chest pain, waterbrash, epigastric burning, and abdominal pain was seen with higher levels of anxiety. Improvement was seen in most upper gastrointestinal symptoms in patients during the COVID‐19 quarantine; anxiety appears to come with a risk of worsening symptoms.
