Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on presentation and outcome of consecutive patients admitted to hospital due to ST-elevation myocardial infarction
The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 29, 2021
Wienbergen H, Retzlaff T, Schmucker J, et al. - Since there is lack of clarity on the effect of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic as well as pandemic-associated social restrictions on clinical course of patients managed for acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), researchers herein compared presentation and result of STEMI patients in the year 2020 vs the years before in a German registry that incorporates all patients hospitalized for acute STEMI in a region with nearly 1 million inhabitants. In terms of age, gender and medical history of patients, there were no significant differences between the groups. However, findings revealed a highly significant increase of STEMI-patients admitted to hospital with advanced infarction and poor prognosis, in the year 2020. During the study span, there was no change in the structure of the emergency network to treat STEMI cases, therefore, these changes are most obviously attributable to COVID-19 pandemic-associated lockdown and the fear of many people to contact medical staff during the pandemic.
