Impact of COVID-19 on percutaneous coronary intervention for ST-elevation myocardial infarction

Heart Oct 27, 2020

Kwok CS, Gale CP, Kinnaird T, et al. - In England, whether there occurred any changes in primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) during the COVID-19 pandemic was investigated by analyzing procedural numbers, clinical characteristics and patient outcomes in this retrospective cohort study. Using the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society-National Institute of Cardiovascular Outcomes Research database, patients who received PCI in England between January 2017 and April 2020 were examined. Overall 34,127 patients with STEMI were included. Findings revealed that after the lockdown in England, primary PCI procedures for STEMI were reduced and overall symptom-to-hospital and door-to-balloon time for patients with STEMI increased. The in-hospital outcomes were not adversely impacted by restructuring health services during COVID-19.
