Impact of COVID-19 on pediatric asthma: Practice adjustments and disease burden
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Jul 03, 2020
Papadopoulos NG, Custovic A, Deschildre A, et al. - By interrogating members of the Pediatric Asthma in Real Life think tank and the World Allergy Organization Pediatric Asthma Committee via an online survey, researchers intended to determine how coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted pediatric asthma services as well as disease burden in their patients. Based on the responses from 91 participants, a significant impact of COVID-19 on pediatric asthma services was obvious: 39% stopped physical appointments, 47% ceased accepting new patients, and 75% limited patients' visits. Per findings, children suffering from asthma did not seem to be disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. Results may even have improved, likely via raised adherence and/or decreased exposures. As a rapid response to the pandemic, clinical services have limited and substituted physical appointments with virtual encounters.
