Impact of COPD and anemia on motor and cognitive performance in the general older population: Results from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing

Respiratory Research Feb 16, 2020

Padberg I, et al. - In this study with the general older population, researchers focused on the influences of COPD and HB (hemoglobin) levels on cognitive and motor performance in these individuals, as well as evaluated potential interaction. They used data from 5,709 individuals who participated in a population-based cohort study, named the English Longitudinal Study of Aging. Worse motor performance was seen in participants with both low HB and COPD vs those with only one exposure, leading to up to 1 s longer time required to finish the five times sit to stand task compared with what would be expected based on purely additive effects. In addition, a longer time to finish the motor-performance task per unit reduction in continuous HB levels was observed in people with COPD vs those without COPD following full adjustment for confounding. In COPD patients, low HB levels were suggested to be possibly contributing to low motor-performance in a supra additive fashion.
