Impact of congenital heart disease on outcomes among pediatric patients hospitalized for influenza infection
BMC Pediatrics Oct 01, 2020
Ghimire LV, et al. - Utilizing the nationally representative Kids Inpatient Database (KID), researchers analyzed data from in-hospital pediatric patients from 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012 and 2016 to examine mortality risks and clinical complications in children with congenital heart disease (CHD) hospitalized for influenza. Children 1 year and older were included and weighted data were used to compare the occurrence of in-hospital mortality and rates of complications like respiratory failure, acute kidney injury, need for mechanical ventilation, arrhythmias and myocarditis. The KID data estimated 125,470 children who were admitted with an influenza infection diagnosis. In this especially vulnerable population, children with CHD who need hospital admission for influenza are at significantly elevated risk of in-hospital mortality, morbidities, highlighting the need to improve preventative measures (eg, vaccination, personal hygiene).
