Impact of choice of volumetry software and nodule management guidelines on recall rates in lung cancer screening
European Journal of Radiology Sep 15, 2019
Soo E, Edey AJ, Mak SM, et al. - In the present study, researchers investigated the effect of the choice of the volumetry software package (VSP) on participant recall rates, when applying various European nodule management guidelines, as well as compared recall rates between seven VSPs and manual diameter measurements. In the UK Lung Screening trial, 156 small-sized lung nodules (50-150 mm3) were evaluated using 7 distinct VSPs (VSP1-7) and manual diameter as well. A 100 mm3 recall threshold did not result in any difference in recall rates only for VSP 5 & 7 compared with the reference standard. The use of a threshold of 80mm3 resulted in no difference in VSP2 & 6 recall rates. Regardless of threshold and when using manual diameter measurements, recall rates were significantly higher for VSP 4. Depending on the type of volumetry software used, appropriate nodule size thresholds for screening recall. The findings show the significance of volumetry package benchmarking.
