Impact of changes to national hypertension guidelines on hypertension management and outcomes in the United Kingdom
Hypertension Feb 13, 2020
Lay-Flurrie SL, Sheppard JP, Stevens RJ, et al. - Given that the use of out-of-office blood pressure monitoring for diagnosing hypertension has been recently advised by national and international guidelines but despite proof of cost-effectiveness, critics showed concerns this would raise cardiovascular morbidity, so, researchers utilized routine clinical data from English general practices, connected to inpatient hospital, death, and socio-economic status data, to determine the influence of these changes on the incidence of hypertension, out-of-office monitoring, and cardiovascular morbidity. A decline in hypertension incidence, from 2.1 to 1.4 per 100 person-years, was reported during the study duration. A stabilization in incidence and no rise in cardiovascular events was evident in relation to changes to hypertension guidelines in 2011. Based on these findings, experts concluded that guidelines should continue to advise out-of-office monitoring for hypertension diagnosis.
