Impact of cardiac catheterization timing and contrast media dose on acute kidney injury after cardiac surgery

BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Oct 11, 2018

Jiang W, et al. - Researchers assessed the impact of catheterization timing and contrast media (CM) dose on the incidence of postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI). They examined 1,069 consecutive patients who had cardiac catheterization and cardiac surgery successively from January 2015 to December 2015. The predictors for cardiac surgery associated AKI (CSA-AKI) were determined using univariate analysis and multivariate regression. For better adjustment, they balanced baseline characteristics with propensity score method. The factors that were found to be related to the onset of CSA-AKI included catheterization within 7 days of cardiac surgery and a dose of CM > 240 mg/kg. Results indicated that an attenuated CSA-AKI risk could potentially be achieved in patients who received a dose of CM > 240 mg/kg by postponing the cardiac surgery.
