Impact of bladder volume on treatment planning and clinical outcomes of radiotherapy for patients with cervical cancer
Cancer Management and Research Aug 02, 2019
Ma S, Zhang T, Jiang L, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of 166 patients with locally advanced cervical cancer, researchers focused on the influence of bladder volume on treatment planning and clinical results of radiotherapy. Based on average bladder volume during radiotherapy (external beam radiation therapy and intracavitary brachytherapy), following four groups of patients were defined: group A: V < 100 mL, group B: 100 mL ≤ V ≤ 150 mL, group C: 150 mL < V ≤ 200 mL, group D: V > 200 mL. Findings revealed that the delivered dose to target, rectum, and bladder was significantly influenced by the bladder volume, for patients with cervical cancer. They also found a low rate of late radiation-induced proctitis and cystitis and a mild degree of reaction in correlation with a bladder volume range of 100–150 mL. This was considered as the optimum bladder volume for patients with cervical cancer during radiotherapy.
