Impact of bile acids on the severity of laryngo‐pharyngeal reflux

Clinical Otolaryngology Sep 07, 2020

De Corso E, Baroni S, Salonna G, et al. - In this observational prospective comparative study, researchers sought to assess the effect of bile acids on the severity of laryngo‐pharyngeal reflux (LPR) and the possible association with esophagitis and upper airway malignancies, as well as to explore whether salivary bile acids and molecules other than pepsin might serve as diagnostic biomarkers of LPR. This investigation was carried out on 62 consecutive adult outpatients suspected of LPR at the otorhinolaryngology unit of a tertiary hospital. The data indicate that elevated bile acid concentrations are correlated with higher Reflux Symptoms Index and Reflux Findings Score values in LPR, as well as a higher risk of esophagitis and history of upper airway malignancies. Finally, the authors discovered that among the molecules tested, bile acids offered the best biometric parameters for LPR diagnosis.
