Impact of balloon post-dilation on 6-year mortality after transcatheter aortic valve replacement
Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Nov 27, 2020
Shimokawa A, Yoshitani K, Hayashi H, et al. - Researchers undertook this single center retrospective analysis to gain clarity if balloon post-dilation (BPD) impacts long-term mortality of patients with transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Participants were patients who received TAVR from January 2014 to December 2016. Implantation of balloon-expandable Sapien XT or Sapien3, or self-expandable CoreValve or Evolute R was performed as per the decision of the surgeon considering the degree of calcification of the aortic valve. At 6 years, cumulative incidence of mortality was estimated to be 22.8%. Significant factors of mortality included Society of Thoracic Surgeons score, BPD, and paravalvular regurgitation of at least moderate to mild severity post-deploying. Overall, BPD was shown to be related to decreased 6-year mortality.
