Impact of autologous blood transfusion on survival and recurrence among patients undergoing partial hepatectomy for colorectal cancer liver metastases
Journal of the American College of Surgeons Nov 21, 2018
Kang R, et al. – Given the limited data supporting the assumption that autologous transfusion is unsafe in major oncologic surgery due to a theoretic risk of spreading metastatic disease, researchers retrospectively analyzed 147 patients who underwent partial hepatectomy for colorectal cancer metastases at a single institution to assess the validity of this assumption. A total of 74 patients received autologous transfusion and 73 received no transfusion. Outcomes revealed no association of autologous blood transfusion with an increased recurrence risk or a higher mortality rate. Hence, the researchers indicated transfusing filtered autologous blood to be safe for patients undergoing liver resections for colorectal cancer metastases.
