Khanna R, et al. - This retrospective cohort study elucidated the impact of preoperative anemia and blood transfusion on rates of 30-day all-cause readmission and hospital stay after spinal surgery. After controlling for other variables, an association was evident, of both receipt of blood transfusion and any degree of preoperative anemia with increased length of hospital stay. Furthermore, increased rate of readmission was reported in relation to severe anemia, but not receipt of blood transfusion.
