Impact of alcohol use disorder treatment on clinical outcomes among patients with cirrhosis
Hepatology Nov 27, 2019
Rogal S, Youk A, Zhang H, et al. - By performing this retrospective cohort analysis of Veterans with cirrhosis who took Veterans Health Administration care and had an index diagnosis of alcohol use disorder (AUD) between 2011 and 2015, researchers focused on characterizing the use of as well as outcomes related to AUD treatment in patients with cirrhosis. This study included 35,682 Veterans with cirrhosis and AUD. A significant decrease in incident hepatic decompensation and a non-significant reduction in short-term all-cause mortality, and a significant reduction in long-term all-cause mortality were observed in relation to behavioral and/or pharmacotherapy-based AUD treatment, as revealed in adjusted analyses. During a 6-month follow-up, the non-receipt of behavioral or pharmacotherapy treatment for AUD was reported in most patients with cirrhosis and coexisting AUD. Findings also revealed decreases in hepatic decompensation and mortality.
