Impact of age on outcomes following endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis
International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology Nov 08, 2019
Crosby DL, et al. - Using 22-item Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) scores, researchers identified differences in outcomes by age following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), a common condition that affects people of all ages and negatively impacts the quality of life. Data were collected retrospectively from 1,252 adult CRS patients electing to undergo ESS (2007-2018). Using a mixed models analysis, changes in SNOT-22 scores were analyzed. Investigators found that patients younger than 50 years had a higher mean pre-ESS SNOT-22 score compared with those of at least 50 years of age after adjusting for gender, race, polyp status, and the number of prior ESSs. After ESS, both age groups exhibited significant and durable improvement in SNOT-22 scores. Patients under the age of 50 have higher SNOT-22 pre-ESS scores but converge by 3 months after ESS to the same SNOT-22 scores. SNOT-22 scores change rate is no varied between those younger than 50 years old and those of at least 50 years old.
