Impact of age on excess risk of coronary heart disease in patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia
Heart May 28, 2018
Mundal LJ, et al. - Researchers compared the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and coronary heart disease (CHD) in patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) vs in the general population. Study participants were patients with an FH mutation but without prior AMI and without prior CHD. Data on all AMI and CHD hospitalisations in Norway was obtained. The definition of incident cases was first-time hospitalization or out-of-hospital death due to AMI or CHD. Relative to the general population, a severely increased risk of AMI and CHD was observed in patients with FH. The highest excess risk was found in the youngest group aged 25–39 years, in both sexes.
