Impact of age on atrial fibrillation recurrence following surgical ablation
The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery May 11, 2020
MacGregor RM, Khiabani AJ, Bakir NH, et al. - Researchers sought to determine how age affects the outcomes of surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF). In this retrospective review of patients who underwent the Cox-maze IV procedure, they divided patients into a younger (age <75 years, n = 548) and an elderly cohort (age ≥75 years, n = 148). Outcomes revealed worse efficacy of the Cox-maze IV procedure in elderly patients; however, atrial tachyarrhythmias were not reported in the majority of patients at 5 years. They recommend considering the lower success rate in these greater-risk patients when deciding to perform surgical ablation.
