Impact of age and comorbidities on the effect of transcatheter vs surgical mitral valve repair on inpatient outcomes
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Sep 11, 2019
Jogu HR, Arora S, Strassle PD, et al. - Researchers used the national inpatient sample to determine the influence of age and comorbidities on inpatient safety outcomes of transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR) compared with surgical mitral valve repair (SMVR). They used logistic, generalized logistic, and linear regression to compare inpatient complications, discharge disposition, and length of stay (LOS). This study included a total of 8,716 hospitalizations (91% SMVR, 9% TMVR). More comorbidities and older age were identified in patients treated with TMVR vs SMVR, but the former group had a lower incidence of inpatient complications, shorter LOS, and better discharge disposition; therefore, TMVR vs SMVR may afford a safer choice for older patients and those with a higher burden of comorbidities.
