Impact of adjuvant urinary diversion versus valve ablation alone on progression from chronic to end-stage renal disease in posterior urethral valves: A single institution 15-year time-to-event analysis
The Journal of Urology Oct 27, 2017
Chua ME, et al. - A comparative study was initiated between the long-term progression to the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) of valve ablation alone with the ablation followed by additional urinary diversion, among children with chronic kidney disease stage 3 (CKD3) due to posterior urethral valves (PUV). A temporary delay could be found in the progression to ESRD through the urinary diversion following valve ablation in the study cohort. Nevertheless, there was no long-term benefit arising from diversion in the ultimate incidence of ESRD. Hence, such interventions ought to be regarded as a temporizing measure. Bilateral renal dysplasia and post-surgical estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) served as independent variables speculating the overall CKD progression.
