Impact of a multidisciplinary treatment pathway for atrial fibrillation in the emergency department on hospital admissions and length of stay: Results of a multi-center study
Journal of the American Heart Association Sep 20, 2019
Ptaszek LM, Baugh CW, Lubitz SA, et al. - Given a link of multidisciplinary atrial fibrillation (AF) treatment pathway with a decreased hospital admission rate and attenuated length of stay (LOS) has been shown in a retrospective single-center study, researchers undertook this prospective, 2-stage study at 2 tertiary care hospitals in order to evaluate the applicability of the AF pathway across institutions. Including 104 consecutive patients in each stage, 2 stages were defined: the first stage involved the receipt of routine care by AF patients in the emergency department (ED), and AF patients received care according to the AF pathway in the second stage. For admitted patients, a 3.7-fold decrease in admission rate and a 1.6-fold reduction in average hospital LOS was reported as a consequence of the utilization of a multidisciplinary AF treatment pathway. The use of the AF pathway was not related to a significant change in ED LOS.
