Impact of a diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome on diet, physical activity and contraceptive use in young women: Findings from the Australian Longitudinal Study of Women’s Health

Human Reproduction Feb 06, 2020

Copp T, Cvejic E, McCaffery K, et al. - Researchers examined the changes in diet, physical activity, and contraceptive use following the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In this longitudinal analysis of two waves of data collected 12 months apart from the cohort born 1989–1995 in the Australian Longitudinal Survey on Women’s Health, women were first surveyed in 2012-2013 and were aged 18-23 years. They included women who responded to the 2014 survey (aged 19–24, n = 11,344) as well as the 2015 survey (aged 20–25, n = 8,961). As per the analysis, young women reporting a new diagnosis of PCOS showed a 3.4 times higher likelihood of stopping the use of contraception but exhibited no change in the physical activity or vegetable intake.
