Impact and characterization of delayed panretinal photocoagulation in proliferative diabetic retinopathy

Ohlhausen M, Payne C, Greenlee T, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective clinical study to examine the effect the delayed treatment has on visual outcomes and to describe the medical and socioeconomic factors that contribute to delayed treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). This investigation analyzed 259 patients diagnosed with PDR and treated with panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) from 2015 to present. Visual acuity outcomes through 24 months were contrasted between patients treated the day of diagnosis, 1-14 days, 14-31 days, and over 31 days post-treatment. A delay in PRP treatment beyond 31 days was associated with worse visual outcomes in patients with diagnosed PDR than in those treated earlier. Hospital admissions delay PRP delivery significantly.
