Immunohistochemical expression of mammaglobin in salivary duct carcinomas de novo and salivary duct carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma
Human Pathology Oct 23, 2019
Soares CD, de Lima Morais TM, Carlos R, et al. - Researchers focused on the presence as well as the distribution of mammaglobin immunoexpression in salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) ex-pleomorphic adenomas (PA) in various phases of the adenoma to carcinoma sequence in order to assess its possible implication in carcinogenesis and tumor progression and to know about its expression in SDC de novo. They carried out mammaglobin immunohistochemistry in 84 SG tumors: 41 were PA without malignant change, 13 were intracapsular SDC ex-PA, 5 were frankly invasive SDC ex-PA, 25 were SDC de novo and 10 were secretory carcinomas. In PA, a significant link of mammaglobin expression with recurrence was observed. Findings corroborated a common expression of mammaglobin in SDC de novo and secretory carcinomas. A higher expression of mammaglobin was detected in SDC ex-PA vs in PA, this is indicative of a possible role of mammaglobin in its malignant transformation.
