Immediate postpartum levonorgestrel IUD insertion & breastfeeding outcomes: A noninferiority randomized controlled trial
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Aug 28, 2017
Turok DK, et al. – A noninferiority randomized controlled trial is performed to scrutinize the impact of immediate versus delayed postpartum levonorgestrel IUD insertion on breastfeeding outcomes. These results of non–inferior breastfeeding outcomes between women with immediate and delayed postpartum levonorgestrel IUD insertion propose that immediate postpartum IUD insertion is an acceptable option for women planning to breastfeed and use the levonorgestrel IUD. Expulsion rates are higher with immediate postpartum levonorgestrel IUD insertion compared to delayed insertion, but this disadvantage may be outweighed by the advantages of immediate initiation of contraception. Providers must offer immediate postpartum IUD insertion to breastfeeding women planning to utilize the levonorgestrel IUD.
