Immediate endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy in patients with new onset acute dacryocystitis
The Laryngoscope Jun 20, 2021
Yu B, Tu Y, Zhou G, et al. - In this prospective randomized controlled interventional case series, researchers compared the outcomes of immediate endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (En-DCR) and delayed En-DCR in the treatment of new-onset acute dacryocystitis (AD). Between April 2009 and May 2019, 176 adults who presented to a tertiary eye care center with new-onset AD manifesting within the last 48 hours were randomly assigned to one of two groups. This study included 160 patients (48 men and 112 women), with a median age of 52.8 years (range: 18–82). Postoperative data were gathered from 86 patients in group A and 74 patients in group B. Immediate En-DCR is associated with faster disease resolution and a higher long-term success rate, while also lowering the incidence of complications such as skin fistulization and infection spread.
