Imaging in gynecological disease (19): Clinical and ultrasound features of extragastrointestinal stromal tumors (eGIST)
Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology Oct 15, 2020
Ambrosio M, Testa AC, Moro F, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the clinical and sonographic characteristics of extragastrointestinal stromal tumors (eGISTs) via performing a retrospective multicenter study. From the databases of nine large European gynecologic oncology centers, they identified 35 women with an eGIST; in 17 cases, the findings were incidental, and 18 cases were symptomatic. Per findings, eGISTs on ultrasound are characterized as usually solid, non‐uniform pelvic or abdominal lobular tumors of mixed echogenicity, with or without cystic areas, with rich vascularization and no shadowing. They emphasize clinician to have high suspicion for eGIST when encountering a tumor with these features, without connection to the bowel wall, and no origination from the uterus or adnexa.
