Imaging features and prognostic value of 18F-FDG PET/CT detection of soft-tissue metastasis from lung cancer: A retrospective study
BMC Cancer Jul 01, 2020
Xu T, Zhang X, Zhang S, et al. - This study was undertaken to investigate the imaging features of STM from lung cancer applying fluorine-18fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT), and to evaluate the effect of STM detected at baseline PET/CT on patient survival. Eighty-five patients were diagnosed with STM (78 at baseline PET/CT and 7 at restaging PET/CT) out of 4,543 patients with lung cancer who had undergone 18F-FDG PET/CT in the hospital between January 2013 and September 2018, and these were included in the imaging study. Researchers performed a comparative survival analysis between patients with stage 4 lung cancer with and without STM at baseline PET/CT (n = 78 in each group) and conducted univariate and multivariate analyses to evaluate the factors influencing the prognosis of lung cancer. Researchers presented the PET/CT imaging characteristics of STM from lung cancer and verified that PET/CT can diagnose unsuspected STM to change the staging and treatment of some patients. The data illustrate that STM is not a beneficial prognostic indicator for patients with advanced lung cancer, while the brain and adrenal metastases portend a poor prognosis.
