Imaging appearance and prevalence of the anteromedial meniscofemoral ligament: A potential pitfall to anterior cruciate ligament analysis on MRI
European Journal of Radiology Sep 14, 2019
Trinh JM, De Verbizier J, Lecocq TS, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers characterized the aspect of the anteromedial meniscofemoral ligament on MRI and evaluated its prevalence. For the presence of an anteromedial meniscofemoral ligament, 1,560 knee MRI studies were assessed. Nine full MRI studies from the image archive of the department were also analyzed in relation to these studies. Two radiologists independently assessed the anteromedial meniscofemoral ligament length, thickness and angle with respect to the tibial plateau. The anterior cruciate ligament was evaluated in the same way for comparison reasons. The study population had a prevalence of 0.77% of the anteromedial meniscofemoral ligament. Data reported that the angles of the anteromedial meniscofemoral ligament were 15%-17.7% lower than the angles of the anterior cruciate ligament. A rare structure that can be distinguished from the anterior cruciate ligament based on morphologic criteria is the anteromedial meniscofemoral ligament.
