Identity statuses in prebariatric patients with obesity: Associations with eating disorder symptoms, psychological complaints, and coping behavior?
European Eating Disorders Review Apr 29, 2019
Claes L, et al. - In the present study, a sample consisting of 369 prebariatric patients (68.8% female) was made to fill self-report questionnaires to assess the associations between identity processes/statuses and eating and general psychopathology and coping in these patients. Concerning identity processes, there was a positive correlation of ruminative exploration with eating-related and general psychopathology and maladaptive coping. However, there were protective effects of commitment processes against psychopathology and maladaptive coping. Cluster analyses yielded five identity statuses: being achievement, foreclosure, moratorium, diffusion, and an undifferentiated status; this suggests some heterogeneity within the prebariatric patient group. More eating and general psychopathology and more maladaptive coping were reported in patients in the diffused and moratorium statuses than prebariatric patients of the other statuses. These findings emphasize increasing the psychological help in the prebariatric and postbariatric trajectories of patients in the moratorium and diffused statuses.
