Staartjes VE, et al. - This study scrutinized prognostic tests and sociodemographic factors as predictors of prognosis after lumbar fusion surgery for degenerative disc disease (DDD). While the pantaloon cast test seemed to be the most promising prognostic tool for patients without prior surgery, the results of other prognostic selection tools such as discography and Modic changes were disappointing. Female patients and those without prior spine surgery appeared to be most likely to benefit from fusion surgery for DDD.
