Identification of the uric acid thresholds predicting an increased total and cardiovascular mortality over 20 years
Hypertension Feb 13, 2020
Virdis A, Masi S, Casiglia E, et al. - Researchers evaluated the threshold of serum uric acid (SUA) that raises the risk of total mortality and cardiovascular mortality (CVM) in the URRAH study (Uric Acid Right for Heart Health). They used a large population-based database in this multicentre retrospective, observational study. This research included 22,714 participants. An independent link between SUA and total mortality or CVM was revealed in multivariate Cox regression analyses. At a cutoff value of 4.7 mg/dL, SUA enabled the discrimination of total mortality, and at a cutoff value of 5.6 mg/dL, it allowed differentiation of CVM status. In this study, SUA levels raising the risk of total mortality and CVM were found to be significantly lower compared with those employed for the definition of hyperuricemia in clinical practice. This study affords proof of a cardiovascular SUA threshold that might be of use to clinicians for attaining improved identification of patients carrying a higher risk of CVM.
