Identification of potential barriers to timely access to pediatric hearing aids
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Jan 25, 2020
Zhang L, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study to discover socioeconomic, demographic, and clinical factors that can be correlated with pediatric access to hearing aids. The sample consisted of 90 pediatric patients [ mean (SD) age was 5.6 (3.7) years] diagnosed with hearing impairment and fitted with hearing aids. According to results, insurance type, race/ethnicity, and primary language seemed to be significantly linked to the timeliness of pediatric access to hearing aids, with additional connections seen with the interval from newborn screening to auditory brainstem response testing. Timely access to pediatric hearing aids did not appear to be correlated with zip code and the complexity of the child's medical condition. Identifying possible barriers to timely access to pediatric hearing aids may further address policies to reduce access inequalities for children at risk.
